[WC 307]
We are at the circus. All has gone well until . . . The Fierce Lion and Speedy Zebra main act. Zebra enters and stomps its hoof down on Lion’s toe. It is an accident, but Lion is still roaring mad. Lion chases Zebra out of the circus, through town, down the pier, and onto a tugboat. But Lion follows in a rubber tender. Will he ever catch Zebra?

Zebra on the Go is a fantastical circus of animals and performers all running amuck as Lion chases after Zebra. Poor Lion jumps into a rubber tender, something magical hits his boat, and Lion begins to sink. Fortunately, Zebra sees his friend in trouble and throws the rope with an attached life preserver. This act of friendship/kindness soothes the beast in Lion. The two friends hug. By this time, the entire circus is scattered throughout town, the pier, and even the water.
Rocha’s illustrations capture all the activity and excitement of this runaway circus. Numerous details fill every spread, ready to entice readers to look and search for their favorite animals or performers. Notice Lion’s tail snap to attention when Zebra lands on his toe. A green clown car follows with an elephant not far behind. The children seem happy for this sudden fracas but the adults, not so much. Readers will feel the excitement of this unscheduled race.

The real winner is Nogales’s rhymes. For her debut children’s book, she manages the race with her meter, slowing and racing as needed. Zebras on the Go is a wonderful read-aloud, which kids will want to hear many times. With Barnum & Bailey Circus out of business, Zebra on the Go will help introduce a new generation of children to the fun and excitement of a circus. Reading the fun rhymes will keep adults happily reading. Zebra on the Go is perfect summer reading.
